Newcastle's Grade I-listed Grainger Market has fully reopened after an extensive refurbishment designed to protect the 19th-century landmark for the long term.
Delivered for Newcastle City Council by main contractor Robertson Construction North East, the scheme preserves the market’s heritage while repositioning it as a destination to rival leading European markets.
Project architects FaulknerBrowns describe the venue as "one of the best, if not the best, of the UK’s purpose-designed indoor markets", and the upgrade enhances its offer for traders, residents and visitors.
Two new pavilions have been added at either end of the Arcade to reinforce its role as a social hub, providing flexible spaces to eat, meet and stage events, including live performances and pop-up activities.
Inside, the works include new tiling, refreshed entrances, clearer wayfinding and refurbished toilets. Outside, improved paving, signage and planting create a more welcoming frontage.
Neil Kennedy, Regional Managing Director at main contractor Robertson Construction North East, said: "Grainger Market has been at the heart of Newcastle's retail and cultural landscape for generations, and the transformative work carried out ensures this Grade I listed building will continue to play a crucial role in the city centre for years to come. Importantly, the market remained fully operational throughout our works which have improved sustainability and created new spaces.
"The project showcased our collaborative approach through close liaison with traders, the local community and the supply chain to bring the council's vision to life."
Across the programme, Robertson diverted 100% of waste from landfill, supported more than 300 apprenticeship weeks, created 18 local jobs, and spent 89% of the project value with local suppliers.
