Rail services have resumed between Wolverhampton and Stafford after Network Rail completed major repairs to storm damage near Penkridge.

The route was closed when strong winds on Tuesday, 24 March, brought down a tree which struck and damaged overhead power lines. Specialist teams worked through the night on a complex operation to restore the railway.

In under 48 hours, engineers installed more than 300m of new overhead line, repaired a further 600m, fixed four support structures and confirmed the route was safe to reopen.

Overhead line equipment supplies 25,000 volts of electricity to power electric trains and is vital for operating faster, cleaner services than diesel trains.

Martin Colmey, operations director for Network Rail Central, said: "I am extremely proud of the work of our teams who have completed a difficult and very technical repair quickly and safely."
