GRAHAM has completed and handed over the principal phase of a new clinical building at Birmingham Children's Hospital, marking a major step in the transformation of the Loveday Street site.

Let via NHS England's ProCure23 framework, delivered in partnership with the Crown Commercial Service, the three-storey facility has been formally transferred to Birmingham Women's and Children's NHS Foundation Trust and is due to open later this year. The building will boost surgical capacity and introduce advanced clinical technologies to enhance care for children and young people from the region and beyond.

Inside, the scheme provides a state-of-the-art intraoperative MRI (iMRI) suite, operating theatres and recovery areas, alongside critical electrical and plant infrastructure. Entirely funded by charitable donations, the iMRI suite will give surgeons real-time imaging during procedures, improving precision and reducing the need for repeat operations. Additional theatre capacity is expected to help cut waiting times and improve patient flow. An integrated ground-water heat plant will support the hospital’s transition to more sustainable energy across the wider estate.

Construction was technically complex due to the building's location, tightly surrounded by live clinical areas, with active theatres directly adjacent and below, where even slight noise or vibration risked disruption. Continuous monitoring and careful control of construction impacts were maintained throughout the programme. Close collaboration with the Trust’s Estates Team—ensuring constant communication, shared awareness of upcoming works and co‑ordinated decision-making—was central to keeping clinical services running uninterrupted.

A subsequent phase, to be delivered by Birmingham Women's and Children's NHS Foundation Trust, includes new decarbonisation plant rooms, as well as the fit-out and refurbishment of the Emergency Department and the creation of a new main entrance, both supported by the hospital's charity.
