GRAHAM Breaks Ground On UEL's £45m New Academic Building

GRAHAM has commenced construction of the University of East London's (UEL) flagship New Academic Building at the Stratford Health Campus on Water Lane.

The scheme represents more than £45 million of investment by UEL to deliver a modern teaching, learning and research hub.

Tailored to develop future healthcare professionals, the facility will feature advanced clinical skills centres and a prototype University Primary Care service. Due for completion by July 2027, the building will also create placement opportunities, enabling students to gain practical experience while supporting growth in the regional health workforce. A suite of courses is planned for the site to broaden access to healthcare education.

During construction, GRAHAM will implement a social value programme including new jobs, training, school partnerships, apprenticeships and volunteering. The contractor plans to engage sub-contractors from Newham and within a 40‑mile radius, and will collaborate with Newham Council to give local suppliers direct access to work opportunities, while keeping nearby residents informed throughout the build.

The development is part of a wider £170m commitment by the university over the next three years to expand academic facilities and student accommodation across its campuses for those pursuing healthcare careers.

Designed to leading sustainability standards, the New Academic Building is targeting BREEAM Outstanding, placing it among the UK's most environmentally responsible university facilities. GRAHAM secured the contract through a competitive process, reflecting its experience delivering complex, sustainable projects in higher education and healthcare.

Mark Lynch, Managing Director, Building South at GRAHAM said: "Breaking ground on the Stratford Health Campus is a significant milestone for both UEL and the wider community.

"GRAHAM has a strong track record of delivering high-quality education facilities, and we are proud to bring that expertise to this landmark project. The Stratford Health Campus will create a dynamic environment for learning and collaboration, supporting the development of the next generation of healthcare professionals.

"We look forward to working closely with the university and our partners to bring this landmark project to life."
