Arras Square Transformation Enters Next Phase

Early enabling works are now under way at Arras Square, with visible changes expected in the coming months.

Behind the scenes, the Council is appointing specialist contractors and finalising details for when main works will begin.

An architect is progressing the technical design to honour the area's heritage — particularly the Grade II* listed St Stephen's Church — while improving visibility, safety and prioritising pedestrians.

Planned features include retaining and planting new trees, thoughtful landscaping, sensitive lighting, brand-new CCTV, high‑quality seating, better pathways and upgraded cycling facilities.

Cllr Neil MacDonald, Leader of Ipswich Borough Council, said: "Ipswich Borough Council is moving forward with an exciting transformation of several key public realm areas, with Arras Square at the heart of the improvements, to create a more vibrant, welcoming and better‑connected town centre."

The refreshed layout aims to be cleaner, greener and safer, boost footfall, encourage social and cultural activity, and make Arras Square both a place to pause and enjoy and a pleasant thoroughfare.

A new information panel will incorporate an original French post box as a nod to the town's link with Arras, and a new public art mural will bring added energy while recognising Ipswich's enduring relationship with the northern French city. Together, the scheme signals a confident step towards a more attractive, modern and enjoyable space for residents, workers and visitors.
