Work is under way to improve Oxford's Gloucester Green bus and coach station, with a focus on enhancing the experience for passengers.

Oxfordshire County Council, working with Oxford City Council and its service provider ODS, is investing £150,000 from government-funded bus service improvement plan (BSIP) money to refresh the station for all users.

Councillor Andrew Gant, Oxfordshire County Council's Cabinet Member for Transport Management, said: "Gloucester Green coach station dates from 1989 and it has developed a tired appearance over time. It is certainly not an attractive gateway for local, national and international visitors to Oxford.

"To realise its full potential would require substantial investment and a complete redevelopment, and this remains a long-term ambition. However, in the shorter term, we're delighted that we are able to carry out a series of measures that will improve the environment for everyone that uses it."

A 2023 review of the coach station identified a package of interventions. The programme includes new signage, real time passenger information for arrivals and departures, updated noticeboards, anti-pigeon measures, decluttering, a commercial bin store, repainting, a deep clean, larger planters in key locations, and bespoke accessible seating.

The partnership is engaging Oxfordshire-based suppliers and contractors to deliver the work.

Oxfordshire County Council and local bus operators in the Oxfordshire Bus Enhanced Partnership were awarded more than £10 million last July to fund proposed BSIP measures.
