Network Rail has opened a £10 million rail maintenance depot at Guide Bridge in Greater Manchester, bringing more than 120 staff together under one roof to improve the reliability of passenger and freight services.

Built in just over a year on a 2.3-acre former railway siding, the two-storey facility replaces multiple temporary cabins and unites four track maintenance teams. The consolidation is intended to enhance collaboration and speed up responses to faults, helping to cut delays. The project was delivered £6m under budget through efficiency measures including innovative construction sequencing, smarter material choices and challenging standard approaches.

Clare Waller, Network Rail's interim North West route director, said: "It's fantastic to see this new depot at Guide Bridge now in use and provide modern facilities for the teams based there so they can respond to incidents and maintain the railway for passengers and freight in Greater Manchester.

"The teams have worked across multiple temporary buildings and not the best of environments for many years, so I'm sure this new striking building with top-notch accommodation will make a massive difference to them and the work they are able to achieve."

The building meets modern accessibility standards and includes a lift, accessible toilet and changing rooms. The male changing room has 120 lockers and the female equivalent has 20, both with showers and toilets, while the mess room can accommodate 100 people at once.

Sixty solar panels on the roof are expected to generate around 44% of the depot's energy needs, with a buy-back scheme planned so any surplus can be sold to National Grid. Ten electric vehicle charging points have also been installed as part of Network Rail's shift towards an all-electric fleet.

The Maintenance Delivery Unit operates around the clock to handle incidents and carry out overnight engineering work. The 62-week scheme was managed by Network Rail’s Capital Delivery Buildings and Civils team and delivered by principal contractor Galliford Try. The multi-disciplinary teams now co-located include Permanent Way, Off Track, Lubrication, and Welding & Grinding.
