Skanska Appointed to Govt's New Hospital Programme Framework

Skanska has officially secured a position on the Government's New Hospital Programme (NHP) construction framework. This appointment paves the way for the contractor to design and build a new wave of modern, future-proofed hospitals across the UK, aimed at transforming the national healthcare estate.

With a 25-year history in the UK market, Skanska has an established track record of delivering complex medical environments. The company's portfolio includes high-profile projects such as the Royal Papworth Hospital in Cambridge and the Barts & Royal London Hospital, a leading trauma centre in the capital. Beyond construction, Skanska provides 24-hour facilities management for five NHS trusts, ensuring critical infrastructure remains operational and safe.

Katy Dowding, President and CEO of Skanska UK, commented: "Skanska is no stranger to building some of Britain's most critical healthcare estates. In our 25 years' operating in the UK, we have built and continue to maintain a number of world‑class facilities. We are proud to be part of this future framework and look forward to supporting the delivery of a new era of innovative and future-proofed hospitals. We can't wait to get started."

The firm intends to leverage its international expertise to support the NHP, drawing on experience from major global projects such as the Karolinska University Hospital in Sweden. Skanska's specialists collaborate across European and North American markets to share best practices in sustainability, digital standards, and adaptable clinical design.

Terry Muckian, leader of Skanska UK's building business, described the appointment as an "exciting milestone," noting: "This generational investment will help pave the way for new, innovative hospitals that secure jobs, and open up opportunities to develop skills across the supply chain and the wider construction sector. In the next phase, we will work closely with NHS trusts to develop detailed plans ahead of breaking ground."

Throughout the procurement process, Skanska has worked closely with the NHP team to refine commercial models and delivery approaches. James Davies, Divisional Director at Skanska and lead for the NHP tender, added: "The relationship we've built with the New Hospital Programme team has been excellent. Their collaborative approach has enabled us to shape solutions together that will help drive successful outcomes for patients, staff and communities. This proactive engagement will enable contractors to hit the ground running."
