GMI Construction Group has celebrated a significant step forward in the £50m redevelopment of Freshney Place, marking the installation of the structural steel framework for a new five-screen cinema.

The milestone was commemorated with a steel signing ceremony involving representatives from North East Lincolnshire Council and principal contractor GMI, signalling the shopping centre's evolution into a modern, multi-use leisure destination.

Due for completion in 2027, the project is being delivered by North East Lincolnshire Council with government backing. The scheme aims to revitalise Grimsby's town centre by introducing a contemporary food and market hall, new commercial units, and a redesigned public square. The cinema has already been pre-let to local operator Parkway, a move that underlines strong occupier confidence in the project's success.

The redevelopment is part of a broader strategy to transform Freshney Place into a community hub; an NHS Community Diagnostic Centre has already opened on-site. Earlier works by GMI—which is currently celebrating its 40th anniversary—included the demolition of the former Market Hall and units on Flottergate Mall to clear the way for this new-build phase.

The transformation sits alongside several other major local investments, including the 120-home Alexandra Dock scheme by Keepmoat, a new transport hub, and the recently opened Horizon Youth Zone, all aimed at driving Grimsby's long-term economic and social renewal.
