Hertsmere Borough Council Breaks Ground on First Direct-Delivery Social Housing Scheme

Work is officially underway on a landmark residential development in Borehamwood, following a ground-breaking ceremony at the former garage site on Catterick Way.

The project represents a significant shift for Hertsmere Borough Council, as it is the first new-build residential scheme in many years to be both directly delivered by the local authority and designated entirely for social rent.

The development is designed to address the increasing demand for affordable family housing within the borough. It will consist of nine three-bedroom flats, three of which are located on the ground floor. these specific units will feature private gardens and are designed to be fully adaptable for wheelchair users, ensuring the provision of inclusive, accessible accommodation for residents with mobility requirements.

Beyond providing housing, the scheme aims to revitalise the local area by converting a derelict site into a modern residential space. The plans include comprehensive landscaping and the installation of secure cycle storage to support sustainable living.

By expanding the local supply of social rent properties, the council expects to alleviate pressure on the housing waiting list and offer long-term security to families in need. The project is a key component of the council's broader strategy to create safe, sustainable neighbourhoods and tackle the regional housing shortage.

Councillor Alan Matthews, Portfolio Holder for Housing and Housing Development, said: "It's encouraging to see construction begin on these new homes, which will provide high quality accommodation for local families and ensure accessible housing is available for those who need it. Redeveloping this site will make a positive difference to the neighbourhood and deliver lasting benefits for residents."

Jeremy Newmark, Leader of Hertsmere Borough Council, added: "Delivering more social rent homes is a key priority for this council, and this development is proof of that commitment in action. We are determined to play our part in the government's national mission to build 1.5 million homes during this Parliament.

"Every home we build is another step forward in ensuring that residents and families across Hertsmere have access to a safe, decent and secure place to call home."

The construction is being carried out by LIFE Build Solutions. Ken Adams, Managing Director of LIFE Build Solutions, stated: "LIFE Build are proud to be working in partnership with Hertsmere Borough Council to deliver this most important scheme. This project reflects what can be achieved when strong partnerships come together with a shared purpose.

"We at LIFE Build are proud to be playing our part in strengthening this community, and we look forward to handing over homes that will serve local families for many years to come."
