The development of the new Ballycastle Leisure Centre has reached a significant turning point as the project concludes its first twelve months on-site. Led by contractor GRAHAM, the build has progressed from initial groundworks to the completion of the primary structural frame.

Construction on the facility commenced in February 2025. The early phase of the project involved complex site preparation and essential infrastructure improvements, including the creation of a new crossing and filter lane on Quay Road to enhance site access.

Over the last year, the project team has successfully finished the excavation and construction of the swimming pool tank. In December 2025, the installation of the Leisure Centre's structural steelwork was completed, a move that has allowed following trades to begin work on the external and internal blockwork, as well as the roofing system. External works have also advanced, with drainage and pitch perimeter walking paths currently taking shape.

The project recently underwent its second Considerate Constructors Scheme audit, achieving a perfect score of 45/45. This top rating recognises the site's performance across the categories of Environment, Community, and Workforce, highlighting the high standards maintained by the delivery team.

Oliver McMullan, Mayor of Causeway Coast and Glens, praised the progress following a recent visit: "I had the pleasure of visiting the site of the new Ballycastle Leisure Centre in December and was truly impressed by the progress being made. It's fantastic to see the works advancing so well – this facility will be hugely important to the people of Ballycastle and the surrounding area."

The Year Ahead

As the project moves into its second year, the focus shifts toward completing the building's envelope and beginning the internal fit-out. Key objectives for the next twelve months include:

• Finalising the main building shell.

• Installing internal fabric and mechanical and electrical services.

• Commencing external amenities, including a new inclusive play park, a car park, and a pump track.

This strategic investment is being delivered through funding from the Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council, supported by a significant financial contribution from the UK Government. The project remains on track to provide a state-of-the-art wellbeing destination for the Ballycastle community.
