GMI Construction Group has officially started on-site preparatory works for the extensive renovation and restoration of the historic George Hotel in Huddersfield.

The Grade II* listed landmark, which has remained vacant since 2013, is set to undergo a significant upgrade to become a contemporary 108-room hotel featuring a restaurant, bar, gym, and conference facilities. Upon completion, the site will be operated by the Radisson Hotel Group as the first Radisson RED hotel in the Yorkshire and Humber region.

Acquired by Kirklees Council in August 2020, the project is a central element of the Huddersfield Blueprint regeneration programme. GMI has been an integral part of the design phase, collaborating with the council and various stakeholders to ensure the building's heritage is preserved while enhancing its commercial viability. Revised plans for the development were approved in October 2025, with main construction activities scheduled to start later this month.

The restoration strategy focuses on the careful preservation of the hotel's famous stone façade and its distinctive appearance on St George's Square. At the rear of the building, two new set-back storeys will be added to provide additional accommodation. These have been designed to respect the original architecture while providing high-quality modern spaces, effectively blending heritage restoration with contemporary construction.

Initial works are currently focused on the installation of extended hoardings along John William Street. This will facilitate necessary scaffolding and allow for dismantling works to begin on the western side of the structure.

It is a gateway building into the town which, when renovated, can boost our local economy and be perfectly placed for visitors to stay."
