National Grid Enhances Skills And Careers Support For North London Students

National Grid is actively engaging with schools and colleges across North London as part of its North London Reinforcement project. The initiative is designed to bolster local skills, support young people, and highlight career opportunities within the construction and energy industries while the company carries out essential infrastructure upgrades in Hackney and the surrounding areas.

As part of this outreach, National Grid participated in the STEM Employer Open Forum at New City College. The event allowed more than 140 students enrolled in engineering, construction, and electrical courses to interact with industry professionals. During the forum, students received practical career advice, including CV feedback, and explored potential routes into work experience and apprenticeships.

Furthering its commitment to social mobility, National Grid colleagues volunteered at Excelsior Academy in Hackney. Working alongside the organisation Inspire, they supported an employability programme for more than 40 Year 9 students identified as being at risk of becoming NEET (not in education, employment, or training). These sessions were specifically designed to foster teamwork, build confidence, and develop essential workplace skills to prepare students for future educational or vocational paths.

To coincide with National Apprenticeship Week 2026, the company also attended a dedicated careers event at Capital City College’s Haringey campus. This session focused on providing interview coaching, CV support, and guidance on various career pathways, while also strengthening ties between the utility provider and local educational institutions.

The North London Reinforcement project aims to leave a meaningful legacy in the region. By collaborating with education partners and local businesses, National Grid continues to create professional opportunities for young people within the communities where its infrastructure projects are being delivered.
