Work Begins On Major Refurb Of Horsham's Capitol Theatre

Willmott Dixon Interiors has been appointed by Horsham District Council to carry out the first major refurbishment of The Capitol theatre in more than two decades.

Construction work is now underway to modernise and enhance key public areas of the venue, which serves as a central cultural hub for Horsham District. Last refurbished in 2002, The Capitol will undergo improvements across its theatre and cinema spaces, including the auditorium, seating, toilets, bar areas and box office, aimed at improving the overall visitor experience.

As part of the project, seating will be upgraded and new layouts introduced to improve sightlines and accessibility for disabled visitors, allowing them to sit alongside friends and family. The refurbishment also includes mechanical, electrical and plumbing upgrades to support the new design, alongside decorative works to improve front-of-house areas and refresh the building's external façade. The Capitol is scheduled to reopen in late 2026, in time for its annual pantomime season.

The project has been procured through the SCAPE Construction framework and will place a strong emphasis on local employment and skills development. This includes work experience opportunities for students, as well as support for community groups through volunteering and donations.

Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for Well-being, Culture and Green Spaces, Cllr David Skipp, said: "The Council is delighted to be working with Willmott Dixon on this landmark refurbishment of The Capitol. This investment will secure the theatre's future as a first-class destination for film, live performance, family entertainment and cultural events for the future.

"It is especially pleasing to see such good early progress, giving us confidence that the project will be delivered on schedule and to the highest standard.

"We look forward to keeping our residents and visitors up-dated as the transformation unfolds, and to welcoming everyone back to enjoy a revitalised Capitol in 2026."

Adam Worrall, managing director at Willmott Dixon Interiors, said: "We're pleased to be working with Horsham District Council on a project that will significantly enhance a much-loved public asset. The refurbishment will deliver a more attractive, welcoming and accessible space, while supporting environmental sustainability and providing long-term value for the local community."
