Kier To Rebuild Net-Zero Springfield School In Portsmouth

Kier has secured the contract to redevelop Springfield School in Portsmouth under the Department for Education's School Rebuilding Programme.

The purpose-built scheme will be net zero in operation and comprise a three-storey teaching block alongside a double-height sports facility. It will replace the school’s current mix of buildings with modern facilities designed to support the learning of its 1,200 pupils.

The layout has been planned to improve movement and supervision, with multiple student entrances, open corridors and wider junctions to reduce congestion between lessons. Separate access points will enable the local community to use the new sports hall and activity studio outside school hours.

Responding to rising demand for Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities (SEND) places, the design includes a self-contained SEND area. Classrooms will be co-located along a single corridor next to a dedicated garden space to create an inclusive, supportive environment.

John Boughton, managing director for Kier Construction Southern, said: "We are excited to bring this brand-new facility to the Portsmouth community. As a trusted partner to the education sector, our expert team will bring the technical excellence, collaboration and innovation needed to transform Springfield School and benefit the local community for many years to come."

The project has been procured through the DfE’s CF21 Framework, with construction due to begin in March 2026.
