Stockport Launches Construction Hub To Create Inclusive Jobs And Training

Stockport Council has unveiled the One Stockport Construction Hub, a single gateway for skills, training and quality jobs linked to the town's major regeneration pipeline. Launched on Wednesday, 28 January, the Hub is intended to ensure the town's once‑in‑a‑generation transformation delivers long‑term opportunities for all, creating secure routes into the hundreds of construction roles generated each year and helping local businesses adopt green technologies.

Developed with Trafford College Group, local Voluntary, Community and Social Enterprise (VCSE) organisations and contractors, the Hub will connect residents, educators and employers with a clear, consistent pathway into the sector. Alongside tackling national skills shortages, it puts inclusion first by supporting under‑represented groups into high‑quality, secure work.

Its support spans four strands: a brokerage service matching local people to employment and training arising from regeneration projects; construction traineeships and supported apprenticeships for those facing barriers; closer collaboration between contractors and colleges to shape education for young people; and help for firms to seize low‑carbon construction and green technology opportunities.

Cllr Mark Roberts, Leader of Stockport Council, said: "The launch of the One Stockport Construction Hub marks a major milestone in our nationally leading town centre regeneration programme.

"For the first time, contractors have a single point of contact in the borough, and residents have a clear and inclusive route into the thousands of opportunities being created. It is ensuring the town's construction boom delivers lasting benefits for Stockport’s people, communities and businesses."

Early pilots have already delivered results, including a construction traineeship that supported 14 young people from priority groups into training, qualifications and employment. The Hub has also helped local firms move into the Solar PV market and introduced a monthly brokerage model linking contractors with potential candidates. These outcomes demonstrate how regeneration is delivering real and lasting benefits for residents across the borough, aligned with the 15‑year One Stockport, One Future plan to make Stockport the best place in the UK to live a happy, healthy life.
