Sheffield Climate Investment Reaches £1m Target In One Month

Sheffield's new climate investment scheme has hit its £1 million fundraising goal in roughly a month, giving Sheffield City Council the green light to accelerate a programme of local projects to tackle climate change.

Launched on Tuesday 2 December 2025, Sheffield Climate Investment enabled residents and businesses to invest from as little as £5 to support initiatives designed to improve the city. Since launch, the raise has recorded one of the highest proportions of local investors among comparable offers, underlining Sheffield’s strong commitment to local climate action.

Cllr Ben Miskell, Chair of the Transport, Regeneration and Climate Policy Committee, at Sheffield City Council, said: "When we launched Sheffield Climate Investment, I was hopeful that we would meet our incredibly ambitious target of £1million within the 90 day time limit, however, the response from the people of Sheffield, local businesses and investors further afield has been nothing short of sensational.

"This money is now going to be put to good use by kicking off several projects aimed solely at tackling Climate Change. That threat cannot be more serious than it is right now but, by investing in this project and working together, we can have a greener, fairer future for the city and those who live in it."

With the target reached, the Council can now move forward with projects that could include rooftop solar on schools and businesses, home upgrades to improve warmth and reduce bills, an expanded network of electric vehicle charging points, and more green roofs and tree planting to create space for nature, lower temperatures in communities and cut carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

Cllr Miskell added: "The people of this fantastic city were asked to help the Council tackle Climate Change, and they have overwhelmingly agreed that this is the right way forward by trusting us with their money and investing in our project. It is now up to us to put that money to good use, to fund the projects that really will make a difference and that is precisely what we have started to do. Sheffield is a fantastic city, a place filled with amazing communities, history and innovation, we want that to continue, and, through Sheffield Climate Investment, we will ensure the city remains a place for everyone for decades to come."

The first schemes are expected to complete by the end of spring 2027, with further announcements in the coming months. A full list of eligible activities is set out in the UK Government's Green Finance Framework (2025).

Those who missed out, or who want to take part again, can look out for a second round of Sheffield Climate Investment planned for later in 2026.
