Construction is set to begin on a new cycle and pedestrian route along Durham Lane in Eaglescliffe, creating an improved link between key employment sites and surrounding residential areas.

The scheme forms part of the £20 million Levelling Up Fund allocation for Yarm and Eaglescliffe and is designed to provide greater travel choice and improved connectivity across the area. The new cycleway and footway will connect into National Cycle Network Route 14 at the A66 junction and link southwards with the emerging Teeslink development.

Contractor CR Reynolds Ltd has been appointed to deliver the project, with work due to start on site on Monday 12 January 2026. The construction will involve a mix of shared footway-cycleway sections and segregated footways and cycle tracks between the Elton Interchange and the new Eaglescliffe Train Station western car park.

Works will commence just south of the A66 junction and progress southwards in 100-metre sections. Traffic management measures will be in place during off-peak hours to minimise disruption.

The Durham Lane cycle link is part of a broader programme of regeneration across this key employment corridor, including improvements at Eaglescliffe Station by the Tees Valley Combined Authority, the creation of a new western car park led by Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council, and the Teeslink development north of Durham Lane Industrial Park. The 54-acre Teeslink site is being brought forward by Rula Developments Ltd, following the Council’s purchase of the land in 2021 using funding from the Tees Valley Combined Authority’s Indigenous Growth Fund.

It will also connect communities and employment sites along the route, making it easier to commute, get around and support healthier lifestyles."

The cycleway scheme is scheduled for completion in autumn 2026.
