Seven Family Homes Secured For Colchester Residents In Need

Colchester City Council has acquired seven three-bedroom houses off Berechurch Hall Road, converting homes originally intended for private sale into affordable housing for local families.

The properties will be allocated to households in urgent need, providing the security of a permanent home. Rents will be set at affordable levels and capped at the Local Housing Allowance to ensure they remain accessible.

This move forms part of the council's pledge to deliver 290 additional affordable rented homes by 2030, helping to address the housing shortage with high-quality, energy-efficient homes.

Alongside acquisitions, the council works with local developers and housing providers to deliver other affordable options, including below-market rent and discounted sale homes designed to help first-time buyers onto the property ladder.

Approximately 2,500 households are currently on the waiting list for an affordable rented home, and more than 450 households are in temporary accommodation. While seven homes will not solve the crisis, the council says each step makes a difference.

Councillor Julie Young, Deputy Leader and Portfolio Holder for Housing, said: "These homes will make a huge difference to families who need them most, and it shows our determination to keep Colchester a place where everyone belongs. The housing crisis is real, but small steps like this add up and help us move forward."

Working closely with Colchester Borough Homes, the council has a track record of delivery. Recent schemes at Silver Band Close, Veronica Walk and Hedge Drive provided 23 homes, including houses, bungalows, maisonettes and flats.

Consultation is under way on plans for an affordable housing development on Military Road, proposing 28 affordable homes comprising family houses, wheelchair-accessible properties, and one- and two-bedroom homes. Residents are invited to have their say and help shape the design and community features.
