Construction Work Starts On Oldham's Tommyfield Park

Work has begun on Oldham's new Tommyfield Park, marking a significant step in the town centre's regeneration.

The five-acre scheme, being delivered by construction firm Casey on behalf of Oldham Council, will turn the former market site into a welcoming green space for residents, workers and visitors. The park is planned as a fully self‑sustaining area shaped around both nature and people.

Taking its name from the historic Tommyfield Market, which has served Oldham for more than two centuries and is preparing to move into its new home inside The Spindles, the park aims to carry forward the site's community spirit.

Leader of Oldham Council, Cllr Arooj Shah said: "Seeing work begin on Tommyfield Park is a really special moment for Oldham. This site has such deep roots in our town’s history and we are now turning it into something that will serve current and future generations.

"Tommyfield has always been about community and that spirit will live on through this new green space. It will be a place for people to pause, spend time together and enjoy nature in the town centre. This is another important step forward in our wider regeneration journey and we are excited to see the park take shape over the coming months."

Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Finance, Corporate Services and Sustainability, Cllr Abdul Jabbar MBE said: "Sustainability is at the heart of this project. Tommyfield Park is being designed to be a fully self-sustaining green space that supports biodiversity, uses energy responsibly and helps tackle the climate challenges we all face.

"By investing in greener spaces like this in the town centre, we are improving quality of life for residents while making sure our regeneration plans are environmentally responsible and built to last."
