Grantham Fire Station Refurbishment Complete A Month Early

G F Tomlinson has delivered a £1.1m design-and-build refurbishment of Grantham Fire Station for Lincolnshire Fire & Rescue Service, modernising the 1960s-built facility and handing it over a month ahead of programme thanks to improved steel supplies sourced from a local company.

The project refreshed all office spaces with new decoration, carpets and ceilings, created a new kitchen and rest area, and added upgraded training rooms equipped with data and audio technologies. The changing areas were improved, while mechanical and electrical upgrades included a new heating system alongside enhanced emergency lighting and electrical installations.

Externally, the team demolished the existing training tower after it was deemed structurally unsafe and constructed a new fire training tower. The works also extended the car park and delivered water attenuation measures.

Construction was phased over six months to keep the station fully operational. Access for emergency vehicles was maintained at all times, and a quiet room was provided so staff could take confidential calls. The site manager held daily briefings with the station team to coordinate activities and ensure all staff were aware of upcoming works, minimising disruption.

The scheme, procured through the PAGABO Framework, had originally been scheduled to start several years earlier, requiring drawings and plans to be updated before site mobilisation. Given the age of the building, unknowns in the structure emerged on site, and inconsistencies across rooms meant adjustments to wall and ceiling heights were needed. Additional precautions were taken after asbestos was identified within the building and in the ground from earlier demolition activity.
