A new secondary school has been approved by the government for the flagship Victoria North regeneration in Manchester.

The 11 to 16 co-educational school, to be run by Dixons Academy Trust, will be located within the regeneration area and aligned with housing growth across Collyhurst South and the wider Victoria North scheme, providing the extra school places needed for incoming families.

Positioned at the heart of Victoria North, the programme is set to deliver up to 15,000 new homes over the next 15 years between Victoria Train Station and Queen's Park in Collyhurst, across seven new and existing neighbourhoods linked by high-quality green spaces that showcase the River Irk.

Progress to date includes 430 homes completed, a further 550 currently under construction and 4,801 with planning permission as part of the first phase of the council’s long-term investment and redevelopment plan for north Manchester.

Also announced today by government was a £3 billion investment to create new specialist places in mainstream schools for pupils with special educational needs.

Councillor Julie Reid said: "We very much welcome the additional funds announced today to develop specialist provision in mainstream schools, which aligns with the approach we've been taking in Manchester for the last few years now to meet the needs of our children and young people locally who have special educational needs. We look forward to hearing what our allocation of these funds will be, so that we can further extend this work."
