New Nottingham Footbridge Hoisted Into Place Over River Trent

A major milestone has been achieved in Nottingham's infrastructure plans after a new footbridge was lifted into position across the River Trent.

The complex operation follows months of detailed planning and coordination and moves forward a project intended to deliver greener, better-connected travel across the city.

A CC6800 crawler crane, standing 75 metres tall, carried out the dramatic manoeuvre. The bridge will form a key element of Nottingham City Council's Transforming Cities Fund (TCF) programme, launched in 2020 after securing more than £160 million of Government funding for projects that promote sustainable transport and improve connectivity.

Earlier this year, Van Elle's Specialist Piling division completed the bridge's essential foundations on behalf of VolkerStevin Ltd, installing 42 SFA piles between 450mm and 600mm in diameter using a Klemm 709 3G rig.

Working within strict low bearing pressure limits, the team delivered high technical precision. A bespoke pressure gauge system was developed to monitor ground loads in real time, ensuring safe, compliant and efficient pile installation without disruption.

Although piling finished several months ago, recent images of the bridge being positioned underscore the planning, engineering and teamwork behind the early phases. The foundations now play a vital role in enabling the landmark structure to progress towards opening.

Set to be the flagship and final scheme delivered under the TCF, the new river crossing will expand low‑carbon travel options for residents and visitors and strengthen links between key parts of the city.

Van Elle extended thanks to all team members involved in the works, including William Seage, Ryan Phillips, Bagnall, Nathan, Mark Gallimore, Corey West and Redvers Fathers, for their dedication and commitment.
