£5.9m Revamp At East Oxford Community Centre Complete

A ribbon-cutting has formally marked completion of the £5.9m redevelopment of East Oxford Community Centre, signalling the venue's return to use and Oxford City Council's commitment to high-quality community facilities.

Delivered by ODS, the project has created a modern, accessible space while honouring the site's heritage. The former school building at the corner of Cowley Road and Princes Street has undergone a full refurbishment, adding a new kitchen, upgraded toilets — including a Changing Places toilet with shower — and four flexible community rooms, alongside essential heritage works.

The former Chinese Community & Advice Centre and Fusion Arts buildings were demolished and replaced by a low‑carbon three-storey extension featuring a balcony, solar panels and heat pumps. The Council is working with previous tenants to support their return.

Next door, OX Place — the Council's housing company — is building 12 energy‑efficient one- and two-bedroom flats for social rent, due for completion in the new year, placing affordable homes beside the refreshed hub of activities and support.

The overhaul followed deterioration of ageing buildings. Public consultation began in 2016 and showed strongest backing for a comprehensive redevelopment. Demolition to clear the site started in May 2023, with main construction beginning in March 2024. The scheme is partly funded through 14 new affordable shared‑ownership homes on the former East Oxford Games Hall site in Collins Street.

Initially, the centre will open Monday to Friday, 10am–5pm, welcoming returning tenants, offering public tours and taking bookings, with extended hours expected in early 2026.
