Van Elle Rail has recently delivered critical works at Mountfield Tunnel, serving as the Principal Contractor.

The scope included re-forming approximately 115 metres of crest ditching using a 1.5-tonne excavator. Before excavation began, a full topographical survey was completed in line with the design to verify ditch depths and the set-back from the Network Rail boundary fence.

To support safe operations, the ground above the tunnel portal was levelled to permit safe movement of the excavator. The ditch was then re-formed using a combination of mechanical excavation and handheld tools to meet the design specification.

Concrete Canvas was laid along the final 10 metres of the ditch to provide a durable finish and tie into the existing flume. Devegetation was undertaken around the portal, crest and flume areas.

A tension rope system was employed to traverse the flume for brickwork repairs and debris removal. All flume activities were carried out by IRATA-trained personnel, with full safety procedures followed and staff credentials verified prior to starting.

The flume was thoroughly cleaned to restore free water flow, removing moss and historic debris. Brickwork repairs were undertaken where required, including the replacement of approximately 14 bricks. All tools used on site were approved and fully insulated in accordance with safety standards.

The Rail Division reports the works were completed safely and to specification, underscoring a continued focus on quality, safety and collaboration throughout delivery.
