Costain Opens Early Careers Applications For 2026 Intake

Infrastructure solutions company Costain has opened its early careers application process for 2026, offering opportunities across a wide range of sectors including road, rail, integrated transport, energy, water and defence and nuclear.

Following several major contract wins, the company will recruit up to 170 early career professionals across multiple disciplines such as civil, electrical and mechanical engineering, quantity surveying, finance, data development, digital development and project management.

Costain's graduate programme runs for two years, while apprenticeships vary from one to five years depending on the level of study. The company also operates its GRaAPS (Graduates and Apprentices) network to support both professional and personal development. Internships and university placements last between three and twelve months, with work experience and T-Level opportunities also available for school and college students.

The company promotes an "earn and learn" approach and fully covers the cost of professional development charterships through bodies such as the Institution of Civil Engineers, Institution of Chemical Engineers and Institution of Mechanical Engineers.

Costain emphasised its commitment to inclusivity and diversity within its recruitment. In 2025, 49% of the company's graduate cohort came from an ethnic minority background, while 36% were female.

Catherine Warbrick, chief people and sustainability officer at Costain, said: "With a strong pipeline of work across our business, we’re looking for another cohort of collaborative, forward thinkers to ensure we have the capacity and capability to continue to deliver best in class solutions for our new and existing customers.

"The industry requires more skilled workers than ever to service infrastructure projects that support a more prosperous, resilient and decarbonised UK, and we're making long-term investments in our people to help meet this demand and provide an environment that offers high-skilled learning and development."
