Hillingdon Council has unveiled plans for a major new development aimed at expanding dementia nursing care in the borough.

The council is proposing to dispose of its car park adjacent to the Civic Centre, locally known as the Lobster Pot, to developer Urban Vision. The site would be transformed into a state-of-the-art nursing care facility providing 162 beds.

The redevelopment is intended to offer a sustainable and cost-effective way to increase adult social care places in Hillingdon while reducing reliance on expensive private sector provision to meet growing demand.

The council's Cabinet approved the proposals at its meeting on 23 October. The project remains subject to planning permission, and a full planning application will be submitted in due course. Residents will have the opportunity to comment on Urban Vision’s plans during a public consultation.

The new facilities will be designed in collaboration with the council to meet Care Quality Commission standards, ensuring high-quality care and future-proofing for residents’ needs. Arrangements are also being made to maintain parking options for council staff in Uxbridge, with the car park remaining in use until April next year.

Cllr Jane Palmer, Hillingdon Council’s Cabinet Member for Health and Social Care, said: "The size and central location of the site presents an ideal opportunity to increase high quality and accessible care locally for our residents, while addressing the demand for more dementia nursing care provision in the borough.

"By investing in our own facilities, we're reducing reliance on external providers, driving down costs, and creating a more sustainable care system for the future.

"It will also enable residents to continue to live locally in a building designed to support high levels of care and encourage independent living where possible, with opportunities to recruit local people for nursing and care worker roles."
