Offsite construction specialist McAvoy has completed a new modular learning building for Leeds City College and Leeds Sixth Form College, both part of the Luminate Education Group, marking the end of a collaborative project that allowed students to track their future study space from factory floor to campus installation.
Delivered through the NHS Shared Business Services (SBS) Modular Building Framework, the 1,380m² ‘C block’ at the Park Lane campus provides capacity for 300 students. The BREEAM Excellent-rated building includes advanced teaching facilities such as laboratories, preparation rooms, study suites, sports science and massage rooms, changing areas, classrooms and staff offices. McAvoy also delivered associated external works, including hard landscaping and EV charging points.
Around 75% of the building's 42 modules were manufactured offsite — complete with mechanical and electrical systems and internal fit-out — before being craned into position during a five-day installation.
Students played an active role throughout the project, beginning with a site visit to McAvoy's manufacturing facility in Lisburn, where they observed the modular production process. They also witnessed the onsite installation in Leeds, built a scale module model, and experienced a virtual reality walkthrough of the new facility during a VR workshop.
Thomas Boyle, Senior Contracts Manager at McAvoy, commented: "Delivering this snag free modular building all while supporting students at the colleges who are considering careers in engineering, architecture and design, has been a great process. The students have seen first-hand how the building was delivered, and now it is complete will be able to enjoy the cutting-edge space to continue their studies."
