Story Homes has begun on-site works at the former Marley Tiles factory near Ebchester, signalling the start of the remediation phase for its upcoming 60-home development, Newlands Hurst, in Northumberland.
Following Northumberland County Council's resolution to grant planning permission earlier this year, ground activity has now moved into the site remediation stage. The process is set to continue throughout 2026, preparing the brownfield land for the construction phase of the new homes.
The regeneration of the long-vacant industrial site marks a major investment in the local area, transforming disused land into a high-quality residential community. The development will deliver 60 four- to six-bedroom homes from Story Homes’ premium Signature Range, extending the housebuilder’s design-led portfolio into a new setting on the County Durham border.
The scheme has been masterplanned to respond to its surroundings, incorporating three character-led neighbourhood areas: The Farm, The Village, and The Woodland. Each zone will feature tailored architectural details and landscaping designed to reflect the local environment and create a strong sense of place.
Alongside the housing, Story Homes will make more than £1.2 million in community contributions through a Section 106 agreement, supporting education, transport and open space improvements, as well as funding offsite affordable housing. Additional transport enhancements include the installation of new bus stops on the B6309 and a £300,000 bus service subsidy, aimed at boosting public transport links for neighbouring communities including Whittonstall, Dilston and Slaley.
