Kier Delivers New 'Vintage Seaside' Blood Donor Centre For NHS In Brighton

Kier has completed the refurbishment of a new 'vintage seaside' themed blood donor centre in Brighton, designed to support NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) in boosting blood donation across the region.

The new Brighton Blood Donor Centre has capacity for 1,100 appointments each week, with donations from the facility potentially saving up to 3,300 lives.

Delivered by Kier Places in just 14 weeks, the project was completed in partnership with multi-disciplinary consultancy Pick Everard, which provided architecture, interior design, and mechanical and electrical (M&E) services.

The centre is one of three permanent NHS donor sites opened in the past ten months as part of NHSBT’s national strategy to increase blood stocks and donor numbers in England. The scheme follows the opening of Concept House in Southampton in June, also delivered by Kier Places and Pick Everard.

Inside, the centre features six donation chairs, a recovery bed, private consultation rooms, a staff chill-out area and prayer room, alongside a modern waiting area and environmentally controlled storage spaces. Existing M&E systems were stripped out and replaced to meet updated healthcare standards.

Designed with a distinctive 'vintage seaside' theme, the interior draws inspiration from Brighton’s coastal heritage, with pastel tones, sand-effect flooring, and photographs of local landmarks. Each consultation room is named after an iconic Brighton site, including the Royal Pavilion and Palace Pier.

Alec Jackman, regional director for Building Solutions, part of Kier Places, said: "This new centre represents a significant step forward for NHSBT in Brighton, and we’re proud to have played a part in delivering a facility that will directly benefit patients and the wider community.

"Our expertise lies in delivering fast-paced refurbishment projects, and this scheme is a strong example of how we can transform existing spaces into modern, fit-for-purpose healthcare environments. The urgency around blood donation meant speed and precision were essential - and our teams, alongside our trusted partners, delivered exactly that.

"The success of this project was built on strong collaboration between NHSBT, Kier, and Pick Everard. Together, we’ve created a high-quality donation centre that will serve Brighton and the surrounding area for years to come, and we look forward to continuing to support NHSBT in its strategy for increasing donor numbers."
