NHS To Save Millions As Great British Energy Expands Solar Rollout Across England

Dozens of NHS trusts across England are set to benefit from new funding for solar panels as part of an expanded government-backed Great British Energy initiative aimed at cutting energy bills and boosting sustainability across public services.

Under the extended scheme, 34 NHS trusts, including 10 already participating, will receive funding from Great British Energy and the UK government to install solar panels at around 70 additional sites, ranging from major hospitals to community and mental health facilities. In total, approximately 260 NHS sites will benefit from the solar rollout.

The expansion forms part of a wider initiative to install solar energy systems on NHS, military, and school sites nationwide, helping to reduce energy costs and reliance on fossil fuels while supporting the UK's transition to clean, homegrown power.

According to government estimates, the latest phase of investment could deliver up to £65 million in lifetime energy bill savings for participating NHS trusts. Across the full programme, total savings could reach £325 million, with the average NHS site expected to save around £35,000 annually.

The NHS, which is the largest public sector energy user in the UK, currently faces an estimated annual energy bill of £1.34 billion — nearly double what it was in 2019. Rising global fuel prices have significantly increased costs, putting additional strain on healthcare budgets.

By generating their own renewable power — and potentially selling surplus energy back to the grid — NHS trusts will be able to redirect millions of pounds in savings back into frontline services, supporting patient care while contributing to national climate goals.
