Major Milestone Reached in Halifax Town Centre Transformation

Calderdale Council's project to transform travel in and around Halifax has reached a key milestone, with major upgrades complete at the Bull Green junction and surrounding area.

The improvements form part of the A629 Phase 2 Halifax Town Centre Project, which is fully funded through the West Yorkshire Combined Authority’s West Yorkshire-plus Transport Fund. The scheme aims to make Halifax more accessible, sustainable, and attractive for all who live, work, and travel through the town.

To minimise disruption, construction has been divided into three sections — western, eastern, and central. Initial work has focused on the western phase, where significant improvements have already been delivered, including wider, safer spaces for pedestrians and upgraded crossings.

The newly completed Bull Green junction marks a major step forward in this phase. One of the most visible changes is the removal of the roundabout and the installation of new, linked traffic signals that will work in coordination with others across the town centre to improve traffic flow during busy periods.

The upgrades have also enabled several bus services to return to George Square, supported by a new signalised right turn from George Street, making it easier for buses and taxis to travel towards north Halifax.

A new Bull Green car park is now open, with landscaping and tree planting due to take place during the next planting season to create a more welcoming gateway into the town centre.

Earlier this year, work was also completed at the Skircoat Road and Prescott Street junction, where new islands, crossings, and signals have been introduced to improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists while keeping traffic moving efficiently.

Elsewhere, crossings on Commercial Street and Fountain Street have been upgraded, and new cycle routes will further enhance connectivity around the junction. The reversal of the one-way system on Powell Street now supports easier access to the Victoria Theatre and nearby businesses from Fountain Street.

All new features have been designed with accessibility in mind, using high-quality materials that reflect feedback from local residents and businesses gathered during public engagement.

The next stage of the western phase will focus on improvements around Pellon Lane at Cow Green, where a temporary crossing is currently in place following the permanent closure of the subway.

Contractor Galliford Try will then move on to deliver the next phase of the project in the east of the town, which will include upgrades around Halifax Rail Station, the Piece Hall, Woolshops, Halifax Minster, and key routes in and out of the town centre.
