Valcan's VitraDual Elevates Façade Safety And Aesthetics At Sheffield Student Accommodation

Valcan has played a central role in the transformation of iQ Steel, a modern student accommodation development in the heart of Sheffield, as part of a comprehensive façade upgrade aimed at enhancing fire safety, performance, and aesthetics.

Specified by leading architects Scott Brownrigg Limited, over 1,429m² of Valcan's VitraDualA1-rated aluminium cladding panels were installed on the building’s exterior. The project features a sophisticated palette of Slate Grey and Woodcreate Ascot Teak, offering a striking blend of contemporary and natural finishes. Installation was completed using a rivet-fix system by Curtis Moore Cladding Systems, ensuring a durable and precise application that meets the highest industry standards.

Originally clad in timber, the façade was fully upgraded to meet modern fire safety regulations while also delivering a strong architectural statement. The decision to replace combustible materials with VitraDual reflects a growing demand for non-combustible cladding solutions that do not compromise on visual appeal.

The Woodcreate Ascot Teak finish was selected for its highly realistic timber effect, offering the natural appearance of wood — including its grain, knots, and texture — without the ongoing maintenance or fire risk associated with real timber. This finish not only complements the urban character of the building but also supports the long-term performance goals set by the client.

Situated near both the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University, iQ Steel is a popular choice among students. The façade upgrade now provides added reassurance for residents and their families, reinforcing the development's reputation as a safe, stylish, and future-ready living environment.

"Projects like iQ Steel highlight the versatility and safety credentials of VitraDual," said a Valcan spokesperson. "By combining fire compliance with premium aesthetics, we help clients meet both regulatory and design goals without compromise."

Valcan continues to lead the way in non-combustible cladding solutions for the education and residential sectors, delivering products that perform as well as they look.
