Farrans Construction has reached a key stage in its work at Layer Water Treatment Works (WTW) in Layer de la Haye, where Essex & Suffolk Water is carrying out essential upgrades to secure a reliable supply of clean and great-tasting water for the region.

The main concrete base slab has now been completed, including multiple plinths designed to support a structural steel frame and a network of pipework. This milestone allows the next phase of the project to progress, with the installation of the steel frame and associated pipework to follow before the lifting and placement of ten filter tanks.

Construction teams are continuing work adjacent to the slab, installing and connecting all necessary pipework to support the wider system.

The project will deliver a new chemical-free pre-treatment system, which is being built off-site in the UK to minimise disruption. Once complete, it will be delivered and installed at Layer WTW, with installation expected by summer 2026. The upgraded facility will enhance water resilience and help manage the effects of climate change, ensuring consistent water quality even when raw water sources are affected by environmental pressures.
