Three leading construction and infrastructure companies — Morgan Sindall Infrastructure, Costain Limited, and HOCHTIEF (UK) Construction Ltd — have been appointed to a new long-term partnership to support critical infrastructure at Sellafield.
The Infrastructure Delivery Partnership (IDP) will play a central role in delivering and maintaining essential services across the site, including electricity distribution, water, road and rail networks, bridges, foundations and security installations.
Designed to drive value for money and boost investment in skills, innovation, capability and sustainability, the partnership aims to deliver lasting benefits for Sellafield and its surrounding communities.
The contracts run for an initial nine years, with the option to extend for a further six years, potentially taking the partnership through to 2040.
Work will be split into three specialist lots:
• Electrical Distribution Partner: Morgan Sindall Infrastructure
• Utilities Partner: Costain Limited
• Civils Partner: HOCHTIEF (UK) Construction Ltd
Under the agreement, the companies will be responsible for detailed design, procurement, installation, construction, commissioning and handover activities for infrastructure projects across the site.
The partnership carries strong commitments to support economic growth and community development in west Cumbria, in line with Sellafield’s Social Impact Strategy.
Key pledges include:
• Supporting local business growth and improving access to opportunities at Sellafield and beyond.
• Creating employment and developing a skilled local labour pool.
• Providing apprenticeships, internships, upskilling, work placements, and work experience.
• Donating significant employee volunteering hours to third sector organisations.
In addition, the three companies will work together on a joint sustainability plan, ensuring their efforts are aligned with local priorities and deliver maximum impact and return on investment.
The IDP forms a key part of Sellafield Ltd's Overarching Acquisition Strategy, replacing the existing Infrastructure Strategic Alliance.
