Costain has been awarded a £70 million contract by Nuclear Restoration Services (NRS) to deliver a major decommissioning project at the Trawsfynydd nuclear power station in Snowdonia National Park, North Wales.

The company's in-house engineering team will collaborate with NRS to ensure the safe and compliant decommissioning of the site’s 1960s-era reactor buildings, which have been undergoing phased decommissioning since 1991. The programme is expected to span approximately four years.

At its peak, Costain is expected to employ more than 100 people to deliver the programme, creating opportunities to boost regional prosperity through skills development and a lasting contribution to the local economy.

Costain will manage the deconstruction and partial reduction in the height of the power station’s two reactor buildings from approximately 54m to 25m, lessening their visual impact to local communities. Costain will also deliver civils and remedial works to ensure that the buildings are in a safe and stable configuration for the commencement of subsequent decommissioning activity on the site.
