Good Hope Hospital in Sutton Coldfield has officially opened a new Medical Assessment Unit, delivered by offsite construction specialist McAvoy.

The milestone was celebrated with an opening ceremony attended by the Mayor of the Royal Town of Sutton Coldfield, Cindy Yip.

Part of a £4 million capital investment, the project involved demolishing an old building that previously housed medical records, completing extensive excavation works, and removing 531 tonnes of waste. Six prefabricated modules were then craned into position over an eight-hour period.

The new unit provides a light, modern and spacious environment for both patients and staff. Features include a larger waiting area, a quiet room for patients and families, a new reception desk, a dedicated pharmacy room, nurse triage spaces and medical assessment rooms designed to improve privacy and dignity.

The scheme was developed in partnership with McAvoy over a seven-month period, with the modules already 70% complete before leaving the factory. Sustainability was a major focus, with final figures showing 99% of waste diverted from landfill. McAvoy also reduced carbon emissions by connecting to existing power supplies, avoiding the need for diesel generators during construction.

The project supported apprenticeships in both factory and site construction. The Trust, which runs Good Hope Hospital, was named among the UK’s Top 100 Apprenticeship Employers last year and is the highest-ranked NHS organisation on the list, with over 1,000 apprentices in training.

Thomas Boyle, Senior Contracts Manager from McAvoy, said: "Working in close collaboration with the team at Good Hope Hospital, we were able to deliver a high-quality, sustainable facility. With 70% of the modules completed in our factory before arriving on site, disruption was kept to a minimum. We’re also proud that the project supported the local economy, with 20% of the workforce employed from within 15 miles of the site."
