Morgan Sindall Construction has completed the topping out of Junction Mills, a £19.3 million new build for Bradford College on Thornton Road, which will provide a specialist training facility for automotive, digital, and engineering skills.

The four-storey building is being delivered with £17.8 million from the Department for Education's Further Education Capital Transformation Fund (FECTF) and a £1.5 million contribution from Bradford College. Once complete in 2026, the facility will house the Automotive and Digital Engineering Department, providing specialist spaces for training in areas such as electric and hybrid vehicles, advanced manufacturing, and digital engineering.

Guests at the topping out ceremony event included Bradford College governors, staff involved in the project, and Level 2 Motor Vehicle students, who will relocate to the new premises on completion. Attendees were given a briefing by Morgan Sindall Project Manager Dan Marsh before touring the building, reviewing construction methods and project challenges, and signing the structural steel frame. Vice Principal Chris Malish took part in the topping out by helping to lay roof ballast.

Bradford College and Morgan Sindall have formed an excellent relationship through working tirelessly in collaboration to get this far, and we intend to cement this by bringing the project to a close on time, on budget, and with excellent quality."

The development has already achieved Morgan Sindall's platinum standard for carbon savings — the first scheme in Yorkshire to do so. To date, 182 tonnes of carbon have been saved, equivalent to heating 67 UK homes for a year.

The next phase of the project will include further watertightness works, window installation, completion of the Steel Framing System (SFS) and Cement Particle Boarding, and the continuation of super-structure brickwork

On completion, Junction Mills will provide capacity for up to 650 students, supporting the region’s growth in technology and low-carbon skills.

Junction Mills is part of a wider £32 million estates strategy at Bradford College. Other projects include the refurbished Garden Mills building for higher education STEM students, which opened in 2024.
