Galliford Try's £11m refurbishment of the Stonebow Mental Health Unit in Hereford has been shortlisted for Refurbishment Project of the Year at the Institute of Healthcare Engineering and Estates Management (IHEEM) Awards.

Delivered by Galliford Try's Building West Midlands and South West business for the Herefordshire and Worcestershire Health and Care NHS Trust, the project involved the full refurbishment and expansion of the unit while maintaining full service-user occupation.

The redevelopment created 100% single en-suite rooms, with service users moved only once during the programme to minimise disruption. The upgraded facilities include 39 single bedrooms on the ground floor with direct access to gardens, alongside improved first-floor space for staff welfare.

Designed by Design Buro, the project integrates modern innovations in care and supports the objectives of the Modernising the Mental Health Act 2018 by phasing out dormitory-style accommodation. The new adaptable, interlinked wards are tailored to meet the varied needs of adult, older adult, and dementia patients.

The IHEEM Awards recognise excellence in the healthcare estates sector, showcasing innovation, leadership, and achievement. Winners will be announced at a gala ceremony in Manchester on 21 October.
