FMB Urges Sun Protection After Builder's Melanoma Diagnosis

Construction News Image

The Federation of Master Builders (FMB) has issued a warning to construction workers about the dangers of sun exposure following a melanoma diagnosis in one of its members.

Robert Jones, Director of Cartref Building Restoration Services Limited in Newport, Shropshire, was diagnosed with malignant melanoma on his face after more than 40 years in the industry. A small freckle developed into a cancerous growth, requiring major facial surgery.

Mr Jones attributed the diagnosis to long-term sun exposure during outdoor work. "It's sun exposure," he said. "I mean, obviously I've been in the trade for 40 years now. When we were younger, we didn't think we're invincible. I've just been obviously caught in the sun a lot, you know, it's caught up with me."

Since his treatment, Mr Jones has changed his working habits. He now uses shade structures on site, applies factor 50 sunscreen regularly, and has become more selective about the jobs he accepts. "I'm quite paranoid now about working outside," he explained. "I try to pick and choose a little bit what I do now with my job really, because it's made me quite scared now, to be honest."

The case highlights ongoing concerns about sun safety awareness in construction. "Not really, probably not to be honest," Mr Jones said when asked if builders take sun protection seriously. "We all think we're invincible, don't we? We think it's not going to get to us, but it does."

Skin cancer rates are rising in the UK and affecting people across age groups. During his treatment, Mr Jones became aware of younger patients, including a 16-year-old diagnosed with melanoma from a mole that changed in appearance.

Mr Jones is now calling on fellow builders to take preventative measures. His recommendations include using sunscreen, wearing protective headwear, seeking shade where possible, and monitoring changes in moles and freckles.

Brian Berry, Chief Executive of the Federation of Master Builders, added: "Robert's story is a powerful and sobering reminder that skin cancer poses an increasing threat to anyone working outdoors, particularly our members and those in the building industry. No one is invincible when it comes to the dangers of sun exposure.

"At the FMB, we strongly encourage every builder to prioritise sun safety—applying high-factor sunscreen regularly, wearing protective clothing, and seeking shade whenever possible. Taking these precautions is vital to protecting your skin and preserving your health."
