Farrans has partnered with Durham Works on the Project Pipeline: County Durham and Tees Valley scheme, using the project to inspire local young people to consider careers in construction and civil engineering.
Farrans is delivering 34 kilometres of new 800mm diameter pipeline between Lartington Water Treatment Works and Shildon via Whorley Hill for Northumbrian Water. The project includes two key crossings of the River Tees: at Cotherstone, a tunnel is being constructed 20 metres beneath the river bed, while at Alwent Beck a pipe bridge is being built.
As part of the scheme's social value programme, Karen Alexander, Stakeholder and Social Value Co-ordinator for Farrans, has volunteered with Durham Works to deliver workshops for Year 10 pupils from Easington Academy and other local schools. Over the past year, she has contributed 60 hours across ten sessions, helping students understand career opportunities, employability skills and what employers look for beyond exam results.
The workshops aim to equip students with insights into the world of work, highlighting the importance of qualities such as motivation, enthusiasm and personal accountability. Business ambassadors like Karen encourage pupils to explore roles in industries including construction, offering a direct connection between a major infrastructure project and local career pathways.
