RICS Launches New Professional Pathways For Sustainability And Retrofit

The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) is calling for expressions of interest from professionals and employers for two new pathways to RICS membership.

These new routes, in Residential Retrofit Surveying and Sustainability Advisory, are being developed to reflect the expanding role of surveyors and the increased focus on sustainability, data analytics, and retrofit solutions within the built environment.

According to RICS, the UK needs to complete 500,000 home retrofits per year by 2025 and 1 million by 2030 to meet net-zero targets. This has created an urgent demand for skilled professionals in the domestic retrofit sector. The Residential Retrofit Surveying pathway, which will lead to AssocRICS status, is being explored for professionals who specialise in retrofit services across six key roles, including assessor, designer, and post-retrofit inspector.

The Sustainability Advisory pathway, for a Chartered Surveyor qualification, will support professionals who specialise in strategic sustainability advice. This route will assess expertise in areas such as climate action, nature, circularity, and social value.

Luay Al-Khatib, Director of the Future Innovation Hub at RICS, said the new pathways will extend the reach of surveying and welcome key professionals responsible for planning and managing the future of cities and communities. He added that the first pilot assessments are expected to run in the first half of 2026.
