Holcim UK has installed solar panels at its Moorcroft Quarry in Plymouth as part of its drive to increase renewable energy use across its operations.
A total of 208 roof-mounted panels have been fitted on the quarry’s workshops, generating more than 76,000 KWh of power annually. This will meet around two per cent of the site’s electricity demand and save an estimated 15.9 tonnes of CO2 each year.
The Moorcroft site, which includes a limestone quarry, asphalt and readymix plants, is the latest Holcim UK facility to adopt solar power. The project was managed by Regenerco, with installation carried out by Aniron.
The move follows similar rooftop solar schemes at Holcim's Hulland Ward, Bardon Hill and Callow sites over the past year and forms part of the company’s Net Zero Strategy, which aims to achieve zero emissions before 2050.
Joanna Walker, Energy Manager at Holcim UK, said: "Our initial focus is on identifying suitable locations for roof mounted solar across our UK sites.
"Moorcroft is a welcome addition to the scheme we have already successfully implemented and helps us continue to roll-out renewable energy sources as part of our Net Zero Strategy, helping us on our journey to zero emissions.
"We have further schemes in the pipeline for the rest of the year including both rooftop and ground mounted initiatives."
