Network Rail Completes Major Stabilisation Works At Little Haywood Cutting

Network Rail has finished a programme of vital stabilisation work at Little Haywood cutting, a section of railway within the Shugborough Estate and the Cannock Chase Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), safeguarding the line for both passengers and freight.

The project, delivered in partnership with AmcoGiffen and in close collaboration with the National Trust, focused on strengthening embankments, testing trees, and carrying out safety measures to protect rail users, visitors, and local residents.

The works were deemed essential as the railway faces increasing risks from extreme weather linked to climate change. By stabilising the land, engineers have reduced the chance of landslips and soil erosion, lowering the risk of debris falling onto tracks and disrupting services.

The cutting runs through naturally sloping land in a conservation area, requiring careful planning to limit disruption to the local environment and community. Most of the work was carried out during planned line closures earlier this year, while some tasks were scheduled around live services to keep passenger impact to a minimum.

As part of the project, staff from Network Rail, the National Trust and AmcoGiffen also took part in a volunteering day to support conservation at the site. Teams relocated a set of steps away from an ancient oak tree, protecting the historic woodland and improving visitor access.

The completion of the scheme ensures the long-term resilience of the railway while supporting the preservation of the surrounding landscape.
