A new Tiny Forest, a dense, tennis court-sized woodland, has been planted at the New River Sports Ground in Haringey, thanks to a partnership between the Tarmac Kier Joint Venture (TKJV), environmental charity Earthwatch Europe, Transport for London (TfL), and Haringey Council.

The project, which saw 600 trees planted in a compact area, is designed to create a rich habitat for pollinators and wildlife, while providing local residents with a new space to enjoy and learn from nature. The forest, planted in March 2024, is open to the public and has been carefully maintained by the project partners ever since.

Earthwatch Europe led a community discovery day, inviting local schools and residents to explore the Tiny Forest and take part in hands-on environmental activities. Attendees learned about the forest's ecological value, checked on the health of the young trees, and participated in citizen science by counting bugs, bees and butterflies to assess biodiversity.

The initiative is part of a broader push to green urban spaces and connect communities with nature. The Tiny Forest was made possible through a successful application to the Local Authority Treescape Fund, supported by TKJV. Earthwatch Europe and Haringey Council worked together to identify a suitable location and engage with the local community throughout the process.

TKJV, which maintains TfL's road network in north London, contributed £4,000 to the project as part of its commitment to support communities where it operates.

The forest has been planted using a method that allows trees to grow rapidly without the use of chemicals or fertilisers, with dense planting designed to simulate natural woodland regeneration.
