Phil Brickell MP has voiced his support for fairer procurement practices and a more resilient UK steel sector following a visit to BD Structures, a leading steelwork contractor based in Westhoughton, Lancashire.

During the visit, Mr Brickell toured the company's fabrication facility, gaining first-hand insight into BD Structures’ role in delivering high-quality steel solutions for major infrastructure projects across the country. The tour also offered an opportunity for open dialogue on key issues impacting the structural steelwork industry.

Among the topics raised were ongoing challenges around cash retentions and payment practices across the construction supply chain, as well as the impact of inconsistent public procurement models—concerns widely shared across the industry. BD Structures, a member of the British Constructional Steelwork Association (BCSA), recently joined 35 fellow firms in backing the BCSA's "New Deal for Steel" campaign, calling for a more transparent and supportive procurement system for public infrastructure contracts.

Phil Brickell MP said: "It was fantastic to look around BD Structures and see first hand the work they do. Following April's intervention by the government to save British steel production at Scunthorpe, I was keen to learn more about local fabrication which is crucial in supporting infrastructure development across the country.

"BD Structures impressed me with their innovation and their strong, local roots. They're a pioneering example of Westhoughton's long manufacturing tradition and I look forward to supporting them as they go from strength to strength."
