Tower Hamlets Council has approved plans to demolish the former Albert Jacob House in Roman Road, Bethnal Green East, paving the way for the construction of 53 new affordable homes as part of the borough's drive to tackle its housing crisis.

The new development will rise between five and nine storeys and will also include five commercial units at ground level, creating new opportunities for local businesses.

The scheme is part of the council's home-building programme, which aims to deliver 4,000 new social homes for rent across Tower Hamlets.

Executive Mayor of Tower Hamlets, Lutfur Rahman, said: "We are determined to meet the urgent demand for social housing in Tower Hamlets, with far too many families currently living in overcrowded or unsuitable conditions.

"This is an important project that will provide 53 much-needed social rent homes for our residents."

The project, which was approved by the Development Committee on Thursday 26 June, was designed by London-based architecture practice Child Graddon Lewis, known for its award-winning, community-focused design work.

The development was approved subject to planning obligations and conditions.
