Kier has been awarded a £139 million contract by Severn Trent to deliver a major upgrade of the Wanlip Sewage Treatment Works in Leicestershire.

The project, part of Severn Trent's Green Recovery programme, aims to future-proof one of the utility company's largest wastewater treatment facilities. Serving a population of around 750,000, the upgraded site will be equipped to meet rising demand and stricter environmental regulations.

Key improvements include a 24% increase in dry weather flow capacity and a 20% boost in full flow to treatment, enhancing overall treatment performance and water quality. The upgrade will also strengthen the site’s long-term resilience, helping to safeguard environmental standards in the region.

Wanlip is Severn Trent's third-largest wastewater treatment plant, and the scheme marks a significant investment in infrastructure to support population growth and environmental sustainability. It also reinforces the long-standing partnership between Severn Trent and Kier, built over two decades of collaboration.

The contract follows a successful early contractor involvement (ECI) phase, during which Kier worked closely with Severn Trent and specialist delivery partners on enabling works and the development of detailed designs.

Construction is scheduled to begin in summer 2025, with completion expected by 2028.
