Network Rail Unveils Revised Footbridge Plans For Pensarn And Prestatyn

Construction News Image
Network Rail has updated its designs for new accessible footbridges in Pensarn and Prestatyn, North Wales, following community feedback and engagement with local groups.

The changes form part of the wider Network North Wales project, a collaboration between Network Rail and Transport for Wales aimed at boosting train services along the North Wales Coast by 50%. The initiative is supported by the Welsh Government's £800 million investment in a new train fleet.

To enable the increased frequency of services safely, four high-risk level crossings—two in Pensarn and two in Prestatyn, are set to be closed. These crossings currently present safety risks due to poor visibility and heavy use by vulnerable groups, including children, cyclists and dog walkers.

In Pensarn, the revised proposal includes a single-ramped footbridge connecting the Ty Gwyn and Pen Uchaf level crossings. The design has been adjusted to lower its height and reduce its visual impact, helping it blend more effectively into the coastal setting. It will also support active travel, integrating into local walking and cycling routes.

In Prestatyn, an entirely new footbridge design has been introduced next to Bridge Road. This updated plan replaces previous versions and aligns more closely with community preferences. The new bridge will match the height of the existing road bridge, helping to minimise construction disruption while maintaining access to the Morfa area.

Temporary crossing solutions are being considered to maintain connectivity while construction is underway, with the new bridges expected to be in place ahead of the service uplift in May 2026.

Further community engagement is planned, with more local drop-in sessions scheduled after the summer to provide updates and gather additional feedback.
