Three Derbyshire Schools Benefit From £3.2m Upgrade Programme

Three schools across Derbyshire have received significant upgrades as part of a £3.2 million investment programme completed by construction partner Stepnell.

Working in collaboration with Derbyshire County Council and consultants Concertus, the improvements were delivered under the NHS Shared Business Services Framework and span sites in Buxton and Alfreton.

At Harpur Hill Primary School in Buxton, Stepnell's East Midlands team completed a new Key Stage 2 block that includes a dedicated dance studio, two classrooms, and a central lobby. Additional facilities include a group room, unisex and accessible toilets, storage spaces, and a plant room. The site now also features an external covered canopy connecting the new build to the staff car park. To celebrate the opening of the dance studio, the school hosted a special event featuring performances by pupils and welcomed performer and choreographer Kristian Cunningham to officially open the space.

Over in Alfreton, Swanwick Primary School has benefited from an infill extension that created two adaptable group rooms. The project also involved internal layout changes and fire safety enhancements, as well as external works including new steps, ramps, balustrades, landscaping and lighting.

Nearby, Tibshelf Community School saw the construction of a new four-classroom block specifically designed to support students with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND). The new facility provides inclusive, spacious learning environments and is set to accommodate up to 30 students, reinforcing the council's commitment to accessible education for all.

Tom Sewell, Regional Director at Stepnell, said: "These three projects collectively showcase the value of a complete construction partner in supporting an evolving education sector in the East Midlands, with a focus on quality and effectiveness being standout elements throughout.

"Working closely alongside Derbyshire County Council and Concertus, these council-led construction schemes have been developed with the core aim of supporting local authorities across the UK with enhanced learning environments, spurring growth in local communities and supporting all children to aim high and achieve."
